Roses are Red

Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Doggerel is old,
but ever-new.

I was curious the other day about the origins of this old classic. Fortunately, we can rely on Wikipedia to have answers. It's at least sixteenth century. Odd, the persistence of verse in popular culture. I bet there's even a rap song that uses it.

  1. Research is entirely too easy nowadays if you were able to figure that out with a Wikipedia search! The whole world has contributed to this intellectual soup we call the Internet. It's a crazy, wonderful, chaotic thing!

  2. Yup. I remember (and I swear I'm not as old as this is going to sound to youngsters) I remember when finding an answer to a question meant going to the library, looking up a paper card file, writing down a reference number, tracking the book to a shelf, getting out the book, sitting down and searching it's index and then, if you were really lucky, reading up the answer! Whew. Now I just google :)
